Our Approach to Radiation Therapy
At Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and Goldschmidt Cancer Center, your radiation team includes:
- Radiation oncologists: Medical doctors who oversee your personalized radiation plan.
- Radiation dosimetrists: Use sophisticated computer programs to design the “blueprint” for your radiation therapy.
- Radiation therapists: Specially trained to deliver your radiation using detailed safety protocols.
- Radiation physicists: Check and maintain radiation equipment and supervise more complex treatments.
- Radiation oncology nurses: Provide education and support and help coordinate your care.
Our team works with surgeons, medical oncologists and other specialists to determine the best radiation treatment for your tumor. Depending on your condition, we may recommend radiation alone or combined with surgery, immunotherapy or chemotherapy.
Radiation therapy may be used to help treat cancer or as a palliative treatment to reduce pain and other symptoms. For example, radiation can help treat painful cancer metastases that affect bones or nerves. It can also reduce the size of lung cancer tumors to help you breathe easier.
